【英文说文解字】

各位读者好：

日前在电视上看到中国大陆的新闻，说“北方各省气温跳水”，气温怎么会“跳水”呢？其实啊这是从英文来的，气温下降可以用fall, dive, drop, plunge, plummet等字，dive就是跳水的意思，有时英文记者也会使用nosedive，就是形容股价或温 度好像“鼻子朝下跳水”一般。

在这则新闻中，记者使用了plummet，其实还有slide, slip, slump, sluggish, decline等字都是下降的意思，但幅度较小，好像是溜滑梯一般，dive, plunge, plummet则是骤降，而且还有“主动使劲朝下冲”的味道。

blanket名词是席子，动词就是席卷，其实就是hit、strike侵袭的生动用法。如果是沙尘暴时，记者会用envelope，名词是信封，动词就成了“笼罩”。还有个动词词组 brace for，令人紧张的新闻时常会用到，意思就是“严阵以待”。最后，hectic这个形容词也很有学问，其实就是very busy and fast，匆忙之意。
